Rachel's review of the season Realising that there was one night in the week that the team didn't spend together, it was agreed that we would try our collective hands at a spot of touch rugby. The experience levels ranged from never-held-a-rugby-ball-before, to... tried-out-for-Wales-once-honest. And so it came to pass, the KORFMAULERS were born. We had a chuck about in the park as a taster session, which served as a timely reminder of the true fitness and skill required by the game. With such ill-preparation under our belts we launched straight into a tournament. The tournament was horrific, and some of us are still in counselling (too traumatic to recount here, think rain, hail, mud, cold, thrashings...) However, it did not put off the hardiest among us, who signed up for a summer of league matches. A stroke of genius landed us in the bottom division, and so our campaign for greatness began. An initial win by a massive margin was followed by some very mixed results. It was gratifying to note that the rugby virgins (Kat, Zoe and Pam) grasped the game quickly, and it wasn't long before most members of the team made it on the score sheet. Some cracking performances were put in from a variety of super-subs (many thanks to Robert Harrison, Dan Hurford, Steffan Prince, Rhys Jones and other random lads) who boosted the ranks whilst the regulars were unavailable for selection. Also thanks to the enormous crowds on the touchline providing great encouragement.when they remembered to watch (Robert's kids). Some extremely dodgy reffing (the ability to argue convincingly is as important as catching ability in this league) and somewhat random score-recording left us just out of the playoffs at 5th out of 8 in the league table, but we can look back on a season of great improvement. Another great shame was that we were only able to practice "the korfball spiel" about 9000 times. Bummer!
The die-hards among us will be continuing the campaign in the Twilight Touch
league through September into October. Look out the Lions!!
