After the comfortable win against Cardiff Uni, Bristol City represented a much tougher game for Dragons 2. Encouragingly, the Bristol side had recruited several new players, and were able to field a strong but distinct second team. They took the lead early on, Josh being too casual in defence allowing a shot from mid-range to be scored. Not long after though Joey's immaculate long shot brought the sides level. However, straight from the throw-off, Dragons were slow to reorganise in defence and despite Gwen's valiant attempt to cover conceded a penalty. Bristol made no mistake. Dragons responded instantly, through Josh's running-in shot, and after less than a minute the sides swapped again. It was to prove the only minute that end would spend in attack all half, as they defended convincingly for the rest of the period. At the other end Dragons were regularly frustrated as shot after shot fell over the top of the basket, and second phase ball was squandered. Gwen was regularly beating her marker, but good teamwork in the Bristol defence meant she was unable to take full advantage. She did finally manage to give Dragons the lead, but her side were unable to add another by half-time. The second half saw the Dragons finally start to get reward for their attacks, with James in particular beginning to turn opportunities into goals. A comfortable 3 or 4 goal cushion was maintained through the half, with some nice moves interspersed. One charge by Chris that drew the switch only for Ian to finish was perfectly executed, but sadly Joey wasn't able to finish a great attack which began with his flying interception, swiftly went through a couple of passes before arriving back at Joey who was still sprinting flat out for a running-in shot. The Dragons were comfortably the better side in this half, and had a couple of penalties not been missed, double figures would have deservedly been reached. Gwen was a welcome new addition to the side, consistently beating her marker and competing well in the collect.
Well done to everyone, particularly for Helen for braving the broken finger and
thanks to all the drivers. Thanks also to Ian Dellbridge for reffing.
